New Jersey tea occurs in prairies, savannas, dry sandy woodlands or barrens, and on rocky or gravelly slopes. It grows best in the sun, and in deep, loam soil where it develops a long taproot. Like other deep rooted prairie plants, transplanting is difficult after the first year.
